Abstract:So far, most scholars believe that Criticisms on Zisi-Mencius in the Chapter of Critical Reviews on Twelve Scholars (a chapter in Xunzi, criticizing 12 representative men in pre-Qin Schools) were written by Xunzi. However, the authorship of this part arouses controversy. Although a few scholars represented by Zhou Chicheng have proved that Xunzi was not the writer of this part, inadequacies and even inaccuracies exit in his textual research. In this paper, further researches are conducted for more thorough and logical evidences. First, from the perspective of the writing purpose of criticisms on Zisi-Mencius, contradictions are found out in writing style between this part and the rest parts, which verified the writer of the criticisms is not Xunzi himself. With further re-study on the original writer, the author deems that such criticisms derive from Ziyou’s later followers and they were brought into Xunzi’s anthology by descendants of Xunzi School. It is hoped that Xunzi’s philosophical thoughts can be more veraciously displayed by this textual research. The author further puts forward to academic contention based on philosophical connotations instead of with intensely partisan learning attitude.
