Metaphor has been regarded as a basic cognitive mechanism of human beings from the perspective of cognitive study of language, widely used in daily life. Based on specific language samples existing in economic news, different types of conceptual metaphors have been analyzed, revealing that numerous metaphor phenomena existing in English economic newspapers take on great semantic function, cognitive function and text function on discourse. Metaphorical competence is closely related to foreign language teaching. Therefore, in Business English teaching about economic news discourse, adopting effective teaching strategies contributes to cultivation of students’ metaphorical competence and enhancement of their language dexterity. The study of metaphorical competence should effectively boost the fruit of language acquisition.
