Abstract:Affected by the Movement of Protecting Railways in Sichuan, the Zhang Yaotang Uprising broke out in 1911. There have been still many uncertainties in relevant documents concerning this event for more than a hundred years. After research, Zhang Yaotang who was the leader of the uprising, also known as Zhang Guozheng, was both the head of local militia and a secret society called the Sun Society. As for Zhang Yiqing, he has changed his name to Zhang Qing to avoid a naming taboo, and the evaluation before and after his serving as the Acting Magistrate of Xichang County was still much controverted. After an initial analysis of the reasons for this uprising, the author of this thesis concludes that the cause of his death was his own side, but what's more because of the situation of that time. Although Zhang Qing’s was always handling things with vigor and boldness, for instance, he suppressed the uprising of people mercilessly; he was indeed concerned with people’s livelihood. In this sense, his image of a corrupt official who constantly levies high and excessive taxes on his people should be an exaggerated one, which may be the results of the propaganda by the Revolutionary Party.
