Among the ancient men of letters ever resided in Liangshan area, Yang Shen is the most famous one. His “Song of Southern Plum Blossom” is a masterpiece among the ancient poems describing the scenery of Liangshan area. But this poem has not been studied systematically in academia for a long time. This study collated different versions of the poem and checked its content and the time to compose it. By combing the ties in ancient odes to the plum blossoms, especially the relationship between Su Shi’ works and other poets’ in Song Dynasty, this study reveals that Yang Shen"s poem inherits the tradition in odes to plum blossoms written in exile pioneered by Su Shi implicitly and deliberately. Its literary achievements, historical significance and its cultural value for Liangshan area and other places of Sichuan Province are worth cherishing.
