Abstract:The Tusi Enfeoffment System is a supplement and improvement of the chieftain inheritance system, which was officially established in the Qing Dynasty under the reign of Yongzheng. The inheritance of the chieftainship is directly re- lated to the appointment and abolishment of chieftains. With an ancient theoretical origin and a solid practical basis, the Tusi Enfeoffment System is a further adjustment and advancement of the inheritance system, the official title management system, and the governing system for bordering areas, which is also an inevitable historic choice the rulers of the Qing Dy- nasty had to make with the changes of the chieftain system. It didn′t only meet the desire of the concubine branches and collateral branches to inherit, but also subdued the internal conflicts within the Tusi families. As a result, the Qing impe- rial government weakened the powers of Yi chieftains by dividing their authority to different heirs and paved the way for the subsequent abolishment of chieftain system and the central government control of Yi areas.
