Abstract:Based on two English versions of Li Bai's The Jewel Stairs' Grievance, this paper offers a contrastive study on the distribution of their attitude, gradation and engagement resources and an evaluation on the transformation of appraisal resources between the original and its two English versions under the guidance of Appraisal Theory, which can inspire the translation of attitudes and values in English translation of ancient Chinese poems. It's discovered that in the two English versions, an overall equivalent transformation of attitude, gradation and engagement has been achieved through addition or balance, and, meanwhile, the engagement resource can tolerate slightly flexible adjustments. This paper is intended not for evaluation of the qualities of two English versions but for explanation of the practical value of Appraisal Theory in the study of English translation of ancient Chinese poems, and it should enrich the studies on English versions of Li Bai's poems.
