Abstract:Hu Weiyuan, a Jinshi (nominees who passed the highest-level Imperial Examinations) of Zhejiang province, was appointed as the county magistrate of Xichang from the 20th - 25th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty (1894-1899). During his tenure in Xichang, Hu Weiyuan made great contributions to the local society by harnessing criminal,renovating social conduct, fighting against bandits, rebuilding ditches and altars and constructing schools. Under his governance, the society was stable with simple and honest people and the leaning atmosphere was thriving in Xichang. Based on such historical materials as Xichang County Annals (versions of Guangxu period and of the Republic of China period),Diary of Yujin Pavilion, this paper briefly reviews Hu Weiyuan's official career in Xichang, and explores the great contributions he had made to the county when he was there.
