Abstract:The Ersu language of Southwest China has few speakers and its intergenerational transmission is in the process of being broken. It is urgent for these reasons to document and protect the endangered Ersu language. This article reports some concrete steps in this direction: the creation of an Ersu language database with audio files, development of the Ersu Romanization System, processing of Ersu language data using linguistic softwares, such as ELAN and Flex, annotation of Ersu data in the database in the International Phonetic Alphabet and the Ersu Romanization System, and translation of the Ersu data into Chinese. One more initiative is to use the Ersu language database to compile a dictionary of Ersu and pedagogical materials with audio files.
