Abstract:This paper explores the permanent value and charm of Bret Harte, the famous short-story teller’s artistic creation from his two representative works. As the founder of American native stories, his works have a particular and original taste of his country and possess the unique creating style because he is good at the use of irony writing and sharp contrast. Furthermore, the writer tries to display the complexity, variety and changeability of human nature. The perfect combination of the thoughts, contents and writing techniques in these two stories presents a much deeper American reality. In his writing, the author shows such a tendency to describe the good virtues of human nature in an optimistic and romantic way which not only achieves the exploration of literature's ever-lasing theme but also completes the mission of literary creation.
