Abstract:Wu Zetian was an outstanding empress in Chinese history, who is also a Buddhism believer. Closely associated with Buddhism, she had the indissoluble bond with it. Her mother's Buddhism belief gave her some knowledge of Buddhism since young. Later when she went into the palace, Buddhism became popular among the whole society, which offered her more access to Buddhism. And her experience as a nun in Ganye Temple made her more of a Buddhism believer. Being more and more attached to Buddhism, she began to vigorously support it. She enshrined Buddha Sarira, translated Buddhist scriptures, constructed Buddhist temple and figures of Buddha, which enhanced Buddhism development. At the same time, Buddhism also had a significant impact on Empress Wu, which played an important role in the transition from Tang to Zhou led by her. After she established Wuzhou regime, Buddhism continued to consolidate her rule. Wu Zetian put an effort to develop Buddhism while Buddhism also played an important role in her life.
