Zhang Tai-yan obtained great achievements in almost every respect of archaic Chinese phonology.In the dividing of the archaic rhyme,he advanced the famous twenty-three archaic rhyme system.In the research for archaic initial consonants of archaic Chinese,he advanced systematically the twenty-one initial consonants.In the describing of the value of the archaic Chinese character,he was the first scholar to do it.In the study of the phonetic change of archaic Chinese,his Cheng-yun-tu was an overall summary of the traditional research.
