As conference interpreting is getting increasingly popular with the general public, the standard for evaluating good interpreting stands out prominently. The fundamental question that interpreters must be acutely aware of is whether“faithfulness”in interpreting refers to faithful to the wording on the linguistic level or the discourse on the pragmatic level. Starting with the“capricious”wording of the CPPCC spokesperson, this paper tries to propound that pragmatic equivalence is the supreme standard that interpreters must follow.
