Abstract:During the Wei-Jin and Northern-Southern Dynasties, with the widespread adoption and popularization of paper, book transcription emerged as a prevalent scholarly practice highly valued by literati scholars. This practice not only facilitated the reproduction and transmission of books but also stimulated the dissemination and restructuring of knowledge. Scholarly book transcription carried a threefold significance for literati:reproduction, close reading, and scholarly compilation.Through transcription, scholars not only obtained new copies of texts but also mastered the content of original works, and even produced new adapted transcriptions. When engaging with source texts for transcription,scholar-transcribers had two parallel approaches: proactively designing strategies for transcription-accompanied reading, and critiquing and questioning the content of source texts. In the process of transcription, the content of original works and the opinions of leading scholarly figures jointly shaped the prevailing conventions of book transcription.Transcription embodied the transmission of textual knowledge, and the literati community forged the intellectual system of the Wei-Jin and Northern-Southern Dynasties through this practice.
