Abstract:From late Qing Dynasty to Republic of China,Ba-Shu regions experienced profound social and custom changes, and local chronicles had represented these changes. The marriage customs in these regions also took a new turn full of time characteristics. Specifically, in wedding ceremonies in Shu region, people emphasized inheritance of ancient wedding rituals and advocated thrifty and simple marriage rituals, while in wedding ceremonies in Ba region, people simplified ancient rituals by cutting out the superfluous according to custom of the time, and marriage for betrothal gifts prevailed. After investigation,we found that the differences in marriage customs between the two regions are not only caused by objective factors such as natural economy, history and culture, but also jointly affected by mass migration of people from Huguang to Sichuan Province in late Ming and early Qing dynasties, by ethnic minority customs and cultures,by current social tendencies and other subjective factors. The regional differences and mixed characteristics of Ba-Shu marriage customs reflect the process of collision and integration between traditional ideas and modern western thoughts.
